Analysis of If Heaven Had a Telephone
Audra Caffrey 1967 (Boston)
If Heaven had a telephone
I'd call you everyday.
To check on you like I used to do
Before you went away.
Whether on my way to work
Or to the grocery store.
You were always just a call away
But now you are no more.
If Heaven had a telephone
I'd call you everyday.
To say "I love you" like I used to do
Before you went away.
No longer will I get your call
Or hear your voice today.
I will forever have your memory
That will never go away.
If Heaven had a telephone
I'd call you everyday.
Complaining like I used to do
When my life was in array.
You always had the best advice
A mother's point of view.
You made sure to always end those calls
With, "I believe in you".
If Heaven had a telephone
I'd call you everyday
And ask me like you used to do
"What's on your list today"
Even when your words were harsh
I knew just what you meant.
Your love will be your legacy
Humility your strength.
If Heaven had a telephone
I would have called that day.
But I heard your voice, "I'll be ok"
The day you went away.

About this poem
My mom was my best friend and my rock. She never gave up on me during my alcohol and drug addiction and, for that, I'm celebrating 5 years clean and sober October 15th. She fought cancer 3x over 16 years and she lived beyond her doctor's expectations... But not for those who knew her. I called her every single day to check on her. A habit that is proving hard to break when I jump in my car to head somewhere. You never truly know how much someone is a part of your every day life until they're not there. She lost her battle on October 3rd, 2020 and left behind a legacy of unconditional love, unwavering faith and a courageous warrior. She will be missed by so many. She was the glue that bound our family together. more »
