Analysis of Anthem Singer

Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)

Ooh, say can you see.
By the dawn's early light.
That arising upon the horizon,
Are those who've lied...
Nowhere in sight.

Oh say, could it be,
They are hiding somewhere ho-ooo-ping...
A forgiveness to them comes?
ooo...or will they run,
From lies...
They've told to deceive,
To keep believed.

'Listen.
Isn't that nice.
That's the first time I have heard,
Our neighbor sing like that.
Although a little flat.
But still nice.'

'Yeah, I know.
Wait a minute.
He's beginning to sing again.
Listen closely.
And...
I remember saying he wasn't patriotic.
A nonconformist.'

'Hmmm...
The tune is right.
But,
He must have forgotten the words.
That and the other song,
That begins...
Oh beautiful for sacred skies.
For amber waves of grain.
And purple mountains with fruited plains?
What on Earth was that composer smoking?'

'He's singing again.
Listen.'

'I know one thing,
He's no Luther.'

'Luther?
Luther who?'

'With a name like that,
No wonder I've never heard of him.'
