But it gathers water in the basin
The woman uses it daily
To cool her head
To clean the jars
To water the spices
She squeezes it over the mouths of the sheep
If it is dry, she will not...

All the things I write of my wife

I could write
a thousand poems
ten thousand
about my wife
but soon they would
all sound the same
and
what would my children say
if I said too much?
they might
gasp
or laugh
or be inspired
and get into trouble...

Beirut

Sometimes
I miss Beirut
it is
a scent
a spice
and a noise
certainly not music
where I saw roses
growing in bullet holes
and garbage in flower pots
what a mess
What a mess that tastes
like za’atar and baharat...

My wife says

My wife says
I am so smart
because
I understand things
she does not know
but
I understand
one thing
most of my problems
come from
not listening to her!...

They must not have children

Some say

 put your hands

 firmly

 on God’s word

 Others say

 have God in your heart

 and people in your arms

Sometimes they bicker

How do they have time
to bicker?

They must not have children...

My son will be wise

My oldest son

 will be wiser than me

 sooner than I would like

What can the tree
still offer the apple
when it is ripe to fall?

Perhaps shade
will be enough

Poetry is the pot

Poetry is not water
we pour over ourselves
nor water we drink

a potter does not mold wine

a tailor does not make bodies

We are the water
we pour ourselves
poetry is the...

My friend's new home

A friend has gone
across the world
and now
he is dying
I say
come home!
die in your native land
your home land
where we speak
your language
but
I see now
he is already
home...
