In Remembrance

So brief the flight that carried you away.
Into that far-off place, we often think about and fear.
And so we look above to your final destination;
Your stay with us so short, we never said goodbye.
Memories of you and your inspiration,
Make us smile as we recall your hearty laugh,
And silvery hair and eyes so kind and dear.
You had a special way of making us at ease.
So blessed were we to know you and bask within
The warmth of your friendship's sphere.
When we see your empty desk and chair, without you there,
We grief anew and cry; how greatly missed you'll be.

You lived each day a model of grace and charm.
More than a friendly face, you took the high road to success.
Holding nothing back, you gave your time and energy,
To make this world a better place while you were here.
Though we weep with the angels who carried you away,
And rage at the closed gates that won't relent,
We feel your spirit with us now and cry a little less.
Reliving the hours, days, and years you spent,
Giving comfort and inspiriting us to do our best.
Sleep, a dear friend, sleep well; you lived your life so beautifully.
Though I don't yet understand; I acquiesce and accept your destiny.
Your early chores are through and now it's time to rest.

Pattee Baggett

I have been writing poetry since I was 9 years old. My first poem was published in a teacher's magazine after I started writing it in class. She snatched it up and instead of punishing me, she submitted it to her local magazine. Since that time, I have written many hundreds of poems that I plan to put together into a book. more…
