Unseen Forces

I go to sleep on a waking world,
I shut my eyes on an unknowing day.
The early morning walkers
Have no idea what lay beyond
Their close eyed slumber;
Yet in the middle of their dreams
I was alert to danger,
All too aware that the welcome stranger
Could come unwelcome to any door.
This is the world of the few,
Who hate what the night brings,
And must wrestle it, gag it, subdue it
Before the dawn.
