The Petals and The Stem

We rested blissfully in a bed of flowers that

Swayed lightly with the early winds, and bowed

Gracefully during the showers that bathed

Their fragile skin, peel back and scent the earth!

/You picked these flowers for me, and let them

Scatter 'cross my lap and my hair, slightly

Pink as Dawn laid in our lungs, exhaling midnight air

/We watched as the petals fell quickly away

Loves me, loves me not, loves me, Loves me not

We didn't listen, I didn't listen, I only heard

The birds in the nest that promised Love

And Love is what I felt, until we stared upon the

Last petal, it seemed wilted, no dew drops adorned

/His hands grasped the stem, he never felt the thorns

But I did, and I watched with sorrow, as

Afternoon winds carried it away, so far away

/Oh, how he looked at me when they were all gone

Oh, how he never looked back when he walked away

Oh, how I should have listened to the flowers

Oh, how I knew I had nothing to make him stay

Now I see the thorns, they pinch me more than him

But I can see myself now, not e'ry petal needs a stem
