The Night Sacrifice

July stole in like a black bear
And I admired the night stars as if I knew them
Felt the breeze and moon on my face
Floated above the earth in the old porch swing
Its creaking my oxygen.
Measuring of night by the mind's eye and not moving
Barely, the consumption of a summer fragrance of
Sweet unnamed flowers, these were the things
I thought I should do then. I could not
Just then conjure up all the things I would have
To conquer or had already.
I started to stir once making tea, painting words.
I should have written, found what was lost, but the oak
Branches made a noise like rubbing paper. The sky
Began to laugh. Moon bloated with its own glistening
As I watched to see it burst, the old blanket
At my chin my amulet.
I fended off the hungry need of seeking
Blinked the bear god in the face and sacrificed the
Night into nothing.
