THE ICE MAN (Poem #40)
The corner of our kitchen held a big box,
And in the box we kept ice for our food.
A couple of days are all that we got
Before the ice melted away for good.
Sometimes we would come home late at night
To find a surprise when opening the door
The drip tray had flowed over; what a sigh
As we ran to get a mop for the floor.
Every other day it was always a delight
To hear the iceman coming down the street.
On hot days he was a wonderful sight
We ran after the truck begging for chips to eat.
With big tongs and gloves he would carry a block
Of thick-cold ice delivered right in our door.
Then into our icebox he would give it a flop
Until the day when he would come back with more.
