The Eyes Have It

Your eyes have signalled an abject defeat
despite your words which, even now,
conspire to set a scene of victory complete
with drums and fifes and bogus smiles --
the fire of truth has now gone out
and you demean the memories we shared.
Can you explain the death of love?
Or all that passed since we met then parted?
How lives contain such elemental stuff--
to make perfect light romance, heavy drama
(and cartoons) is mystery. Should we always
expect crying clowns to enter, with blue baloons?
But ah! The hurt within those eyes -- your eyes --
that dam the very tears your speech denies!
