Pequeno Baby Shoes

Len Lewis 1943 (Port of Spain, Trinidad)

We still cherish our teak baby crib
And a small dresser full of mementos
Warm knitted booties white terry bib
Behind reindeer Rudy's shiny red nose
Cute smiling bonnets tied at the chin
First walking boots in small baby bin
One colored safety diaper pin
Red rubber slippers to seek and hide
Jumpers all colors fastened one side
Going-out rompers powder-white vests
Used-to-be so-white christening dress
Stuffed baby toys all kinds of faces
Elegant Barbies tall boots with laces
Chubby-faced dolls dressed to the hilt
Yet memories of one cozy nest we built
Erasing growing-up things they'd said
On a knew-not-better growing-up head
Now they return with their own brood
Often leave their little shoes behind
And that is really when I find
That of those keepsakes in our nest
I treasure baby shoes the best
