Orange Afterglow

Crumbling stones under my feet
Layers of history we forgot to ask why
The smoke in the air is miles from here
We're losing ourselves in the orange afterglow.
Every new building brings us closer to the soil
Every new day begs an unanswered question
Moving closer to the past the further we get
Making the world beautiful in the orange afterglow.
Miles away from the freeway, we bring our technology with us
Sometimes we only feel loved when we're all alone
And we fall asleep under a blanket of orange afterglow.
Mountains of trees reach out to heaven
And a dime bag of happiness comes at the ultimate price;
Quiet streets are noisy with crazy calm
We're only beginning to wake up to the orange afterglow.
There's a storm brewing on the horizon,
Raining down lessons we should have learned long ago.
The wind whispers, "It's never too late,"
And we can almost see a rainbow on the other side . . .
Of the orange afterglow.
