Ninety Feet from Glory

The picture fades in a drying scrap book
Myself at seventeen sliding into third
I was Reese and Reiser
Tearing up the page.
My spikes slice through the ages
Back to July's Fourth,
Flags in flapping chorus
Charcoals smoke surrounds me
Ready to swallow visitors
The Minute Men observe me
Standing still on third
Watching the dust settle
Stained by grass and perspiration
I am the winning run
A hope of glory in photographic dust
In the shadows of sizzled steaks
Readied hot dogs and watermelon rinds
I stand again at third,
Ninety feet from glory
Ninety feet from fame
