My Coast Guard

Semper Paratus is our guide...
and I am proud to be a Coastie until the day I die.
I joined at 17 with a wavier,
not much of a family of my own, you were my savior.
I went to boot right before my senior year,
I've had the most diverse, and professional of careers.
We've been through a lot these last 5 years,
some really good laughs, and sometimes tears.
"Always Ready", not just a saying, a gift to give,
We do our job, "So others may live."
Each day I put on the uniform and lace my boots,
still looking as sharp as a recruit.
I am proud to be doing what I do,
despite what the past may have put me through.
Face the day not knowing what to expect,
go on a rescue, call our loved ones when we're back.
Keep the drugs off the street that ruined my family,
save people on a burning ship from drowning.
My job has taught me to love life,
to fight the good fight as long as it's right.
Here I've found a family and a calling,
to become a civilian the idea seems appalling.

"I find freedom in writing. I grew up in a broken family and watched people around me leave my life because of alcohol and drugs. I spent some time homeless when I was 7, holding up cardboard signs with my mom and baby sister. I was left to ask a lot a questions about life at an early age. I always had a lot of passion and energy with my thoughts, whether they were good or bad. It's when I don't express that passion that I get into trouble. For I am passion and when I am not passionate, I lose myself. I write to acknowledge, I write to cope. I write to let people see someone they think they know. It lets them see me, but most importantly, it lets me see myself. This is why I am successful now; this is how the victim became the victor. This is how I beat the odds." more…
