Military Mothers

The bravest people in the world,
are not a battalion,or, a corps.
But are the Mothers of the world,
who send their children off to War.
Some wore their colors proud,
and on a window pane,
a flag with a star declared their "so proud" claim to fame.
But when the quiet came at nightfall, all the worries started in.
Never shown in public then,
it was almost like a sin.
A frown was permitted,
and occasionally a tear.
But the bad stuff was always kept inside,
premonitions,feelings,and fear.
And if that star turned to gold,
a Nations loss was seen.
And Mothers closed their eyes,
while silent tears began to stream.
Friends showed up and sat awhile,
and remembered quietly.
While pictures on a mantlepiece,
brought memories and things.
Maybe many months later,
a soldier would appear,
and say,I was there when your son died,
the one that you held dear.
And he would lie and say,"He didn't feel a thing".
Just to see the look in the Mothers eyes,
and the peace that those words bring.
He'd say, your son died bravely,
and hand medals to her hand.
At the same time thinking he saved my life,
and now here I stand.
And say to her how brave he was, and all the lives he saved.
And how he took the great-fullness of a World,
for their freedom,
to his grave.
