melted ice cubes

Tonight is hot
sticky hot
the smoke from my cigarette
rises to the light

I peek out the blinds
like a recluse

in her room
our laughter
like cool washcloths
to our fevered heads
our hearts
as full as the ashtrays
beside her bed
our bodies
sliding off one another
with sweat
love
was the ice cubes
clinging together in the glass
that kept us cool
on those hot summer nights
that now taunt me
like the laughter
of the girls
across the stree
