Lighthouse

I reach across ocean to beach,
Pitching beams over green waves
shriveled like wet paper.

Perched upon a granite pedestal,
I flash away stars,
shepherd seafarers, and
illuminate lovers kissing on the sand.

I revolve, scan tides
the waning moon controls,
Pierce mists settling to sleep
upon the water, which whispers
a nautical lullaby.

As the sea and sand and fish rest,
I am a swift sun: I sweep
the horizon, lonesome,
extinguishing the dark where
love breeds.
I stretch my limb of light,
but never far enough;
I fail to touch the dunes.
