Kiss of Destiny
Stillness gripped the chosen spot.
Even the wind dared not breathe.
Nothing stirred the olive branch
awaiting the evil to be unsheathed.
In measured step the offender came.
The kneeling figure rose to meet
the brand that would so cruelly burn
in hot kiss upon his cheek.
In quickening fervor a single tear
escaped to seek and cool the tortured place.
No loving gesture this;
only unspeakable betrayal and disgrace.
In mute awe they led him from the grove;
so heavy the guilt, the pain.
A moment's backward glance revealed
he would not go there again.
This was the beginning of the end.
Nothing now could change the plan.
So well he knew the part he played
in the destiny of Man.
