Holding onto Nothing

As a people,
what do we have?
Possessions can be taken away,
money is subject to change,
careers may not last forever,
but don’t we think ourselves clever?
The problem with pride is the falling,
the pain won’t always be calling,
love is tumultuous and fickle,
and good luck putting joy in a box.
Friends can always fade into black,
family can argue and spat,
we don’t even have ourselves,
for we are constantly changing.
To add it up simply,
we have exactly nothing,
because Nothing is secure,
and Nothing is safe,
so what do we do? we hold onto that wraith.

Humbled in the presence of Absence.
