Flowers from an Ex-Lover
You give me Tulip bulbs thinking I like them,
pleased you remember, confident that I told you.
But, I prefer Tuberoses instead.
I think of a story I heard,
of a girl with tightly bound tulip bulbs
slung off her hip, as testicles.
Bordering a mummified phallic tulip.
Tulips will never be the same again.
Perky butterscotch-pale buds orient
toward sunrays by a glass balcony.
Swelling tapered ends to lobular cups,
atop slender green stems.
Their wet scent empowers me
like scented candles the morning after.
Crisp petals wrinkle like used sheets.
I wait for them to bloom, they genuflect
like fertile pendulums to me.
Stooping to touch my feet.
When they are ready, I will pluck them.
