Another notch on my belt

I've traversed this trail in all its girth
A million times into rebirth
But on the first and millionth time,
It's still just as harsh to climb.
'Tis a path of sorrow, a path of woe
Where I never reap, and only sow
And over the roots and snares I tumble
As my great empires of hope crumble
And as I'm stabbed with her tine,
I simply state that I am fine
So as I see all my hope melt
I add another notch to my belt.
I don't see the purpose for this penalty
Merely for my lack of tenacity
So I gaze at the ground while I walk this trail of scorn
And I wait for the end, to be reborn.
