A Wall

In 1863 Douglas won a medal of honor
For his valor in the field.

The Union praised his courage
And called him their greatest warrior.
They decided to make him Captain.

One warm day, from across the plains,
A letter came addressed to Douglas.
He read the message
That his wife would soon be dead,
A victim of scarlet fever.

In headquarters,
Douglas asked to be granted leave.
The officer took his letter and read.
He handed it back,
Sadly shook his head.

Douglas was honored for his valor,
He was loved and admired by all.
One night Douglas was shot in the back
As he tried to scale a wall.
