A Verse for Summer Love
I remember being a little sun-drunk,
Waiting for my world to crumble around me
And just let it be, let me stay here forever,
Suspended in viscous sunshine,
The flutter of photons as they refract
Off of my skin, and back out into the world.
I remember the feathery caresses
Of wildflower petals, and seizing the opportunity
To take up their fluvial blueness into my skin,
and yet being unwilling to entrap it there.
And suddenly, I remember you
There at my side, unobtrusively observing,
And recall that I wished, for the brevity of an instant,
That all our obligations would float away,
Like front-lawn detritus lifted on a breeze,
And leave us the lie quietly
in our browning, sun-happy skin
