Mère des cauchemars amoureux et funèbres,
Madone des voleurs, complice des tripots,
Ô nuit, qui fais gémir les hiboux, tes suppôts,
Dans le recueillement de tes froides ténèbres,
Que tu couvres de poix opaque ou que tu zèbres
Les objets las du jour et friands de repos,
Je t’aime, car tu rends mon esprit plus dispos,
Et tu calmes mon cœur, mon sang et mes vertèbres.
Mais, hélas ! dans ta brume où chancellent mes pas,
Mon regard anxieux devine et ne voit pas ;
Et j’écarquille en vain mes prunelles avides !
Oh ! que n’ai-je les yeux du chacal ou du lynx
Pour scruter longuement les grands spectres livides
Que j’entends palpiter sous ta robe de sphinx !
