Par quelle fantaisie insolite et malsaine
En vins-je à grimacer devant ma glace, un soir,
Un soir de fin d’automne où Paris, morne et noir,
Pompait lugubrement les brouillards de la Seine ?
Le fait est que mêlant la tendresse à la haine,
La rage à la stupeur, le rire au désespoir,
Ma physionomie en face du miroir
Passa par tous les tons de la mimique humaine.
Et je me recueillais dans ma sincérité
Pour rendre avec une âpre et stricte vérité
Le rictus d’un démon qui maudit sa science,
Quand je vis dans l’éclair du miroir glauque et nu,
Au lieu de mon visage, un visage inconnu
Où se répercutait ma propre conscience !
