Une nuit, — vous allez bien sûr être incrédule,
J’étais au coin du feu, lorsqu’en me retournant,
Je vis debout dans l’ombre un hideux revenant
Minuit sonnait alors à ma vieille pendule.
— « Me reconnais-tu, hein ? » dit-il en ricanant :
Et son ricanement fit un bruit de capsule.
Il ajouta : « je suis le fantôme d’Ursule :
« Je te parlais d’amour jadis, mais maintenant,
« J’aurai, vivant cadavre échappé de ma bière,
« Une loquacité féroce de barbière
« Pour te parler de mort, à travers mon linceul.
Cela dit, l’être blanc s’enfuit dans les ténèbres.
Et j’entends chaque nuit, lorsque je suis tout seul,
Un long chuchotement de paroles funèbres.
