À l'assemblée
Maurice Rollinat 1846 (Châteauroux) – 1903 (Ivry-sur-Seine)
Parmi châtaigniers et genêts
Où s’émouchaient, sans pouvoir paître,
Des montures sous le harnais,
Ronflait l’humble fête champêtre.
Les crincrins et les cornemuses,
La ripaille, un soleil de feu,
Allumaient tout un monde bleu
À faces longues et camuses.
Et, tandis que ce flot humain
— L’enfance comme la vieillesse
Battait les airs de sa liesse...
En grand deuil — au bord du chemin,
Les yeux fermés, — morte aux vacarmes,
Une femme étranglait ses larmes
À genoux, devant une croix.
Rien n’aura l’horreur et l’effroi
De ces pleurs gouttant, sans rien dire,
Dans cet énorme éclat de rire.
