Eh bien! je le voulais. J'aurais bien dû me croire!
Tant de fois à ses torts je cédai la victoire!
Je devais une fois du moins, pour la punir,
Tranquillement l'attendre et la laisser venir.
Non. Oubliant quels cris, quelle aigre impatience
Hier sut me contraindre à la fuite, au silence,
Ce matin, de mon coeur trop facile bonté!
Je veux la ramener sans blesser sa fierté;
J'y vole; contre moi je lui cherche une excuse.
Je viens lui pardonner, et c'est moi qu'elle accuse.
C'est moi qui suis injuste, ingrat, capricieux:
Je prends sur sa faiblesse un empire odieux.
Et sanglots et fureurs, injures menaçantes,
Et larmes, à couler toujours obéissantes!
Et pour la paix il faut, loin d'avoir eu raison,
Confus et repentant, demander mon pardon.

Andre Marie de Chenier

André Marie Chénier was a French poet of Greek and Franco-Levantine origin, associated with the events of the French Revolution of which he was a victim. His sensual, emotive poetry marks him as one of the precursors of the Romantic movement. His career was brought to an abrupt end when he was guillotined for supposed "crimes against the state", just three days before the end of the Reign of Terror.
