Big Dark Teeth

the whiskey-stained pages
of history
flap open
like a diseased wing,
as science pushes
forward
with its cold
calculating eyes.
ignorance
and superstition
gallop around
the flanks,
like feral dogs
on the hunt,
their hot breath
on the neck
of progress.

big dark teeth
gnashing
in the shadows
where the light
of reason
flickers
like a dying flame,
and the howl
of the unknown
echoes through
the ages
a haunting reminder
that we're still
just beasts.

the darkness
that we fear
will consume us whole,
leaving only
the teeth
of our deepest
superstitions
gristbiting in the void.
