"forgiveness"

Cody Floodman 2004 (Minnesota)

April 24

i love you so much, your presence in my life is a candle that brightens the darkness in my soul
you were here in my time for a reason, and I was so glad to be with you through the Earth’s seasons
our conversations brought to life by every word, voices spoken and our hearts were heard
you were more than just a friend to me, but were always a part of my family
i don’t think you ever knew how grateful I am for you

then there became a day when you tore out my eyes, I was too blind to see what happened in your skies
and then out with the tongue, for I couldn’t say another word without your omnipresent lies
you beat me until my bones broke, and cut me until my body bled and leaked
lay there struggling to breathe, didn’t know what you were going to do next to me
i only felt hatred and disdain, for then in my mind a curse was there on your name
you left one day without a trace, and left me behind to pick up the pace

i got myself back up again, but left forever damaged because of my wounds
i heard that you were praised for all of your deeds, but they must’ve never understood what you sowed unto my being
revenge is what you deserved, you needed something lost
i never cared if it was your life if that’s what it cost
so I tried to move on, but it kept me shivering in an emotional frost
and I could never love the same way without thinking about everything that you did

i still love you with all the humanity left inside of my soul, so I closed my eyes and saw you
the bad outweighed the good, but it was you I understood
i finally decided that I was not going to let all of what you did haunt me forever and keep me in bondage
i pictured you there and I spoke to you one last time, even though you weren’t here

i forgive you, and I pray that someday, you could forgive me too
no matter what you did to me, you’re a human being too
throughout my life you were always on my mind, and I thought someday that I could be lost and you’d be the one I’d find
and although that’s not the case, I still treasured your smiling face
I’ll never see you again, but I love you, so thank you for the peace that I needed to be still

Goodbye

About this poem

I wrote this poem after reflecting on the events of the video game The Last of Us Part II, my father's relationship with his parents, and how I imagined the struggle of forgiveness to be after being beaten down by someone.
