ONCE...

ONCE...

Once I was a little boy
Running in the yard
Once I lost all my joy
Life was so damn hard
Once I skinned my knee
Swinging from the branches
Once I longed to be free
From all my second chances
Once I climbed to the Hilltop
Made myself the King
Once I pulled into a truck stop
Missing everything

Always I've been the captain of my fate
Now, Lord I don't want to hesitate
Once I looked to the Cross of Calvary
Now sweet Jesus set me free
Always your tomb is an empty place
Once, now, and always give to me Your Grace

Once I was a surfer
One with the ocean's roar
Once I was a soldier
Gone away to war
Once I jumped into the raging sea
Battled the ocean's swell
Once the enemy watched me
And blew my world to Hell
Once the sun was on my back
My skin a golden brown
Once the enemy pressed the attack
My friends fell to the ground

Once I was the captain of my fate
Now, Lord I don't want to hesitate
Once I looked at the Cross of Calvary
Now sweet Jesus set me free
Always your tombs an empty place
Once, now, and always give to me your grace

Once my Grandson ran to me
Hugged me so so tight
Once my heart failed me
For my life I had to fight
Once he asked for a story
Of how it used to be
Once I saw the light of Glory
Reaching out to me
Once I told him of the tomb
That's been empty all along
Once I lay in a hospital room
So thankful I was wrong

Once I was the captain of my fate
Now, Lord I don't want to hesitate
Always I'll look at the Cross of Calvary
Now sweet Jesus set me free
Once your Tomb was a resting place
Once, now, and always give to me Your Grace
AMEN

About this poem

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1 18
