Sacrifices Many Have Made

David E Leach 1966 (Iowa)

There was a man that had no feelings down below his knees
He’d lost the bottom half of both his legs in a war fought overseas
One day while out on patrol he inadvertently stepped on a mine
Only thing said that day was, “he’s alive and he’ll be fine”
He had no idea what happened, he never heard a sound
Next thing he knew, Walter Reed’s where he was found
With his wife there beside him, and knowing God was behind them, he knew that there was nothing they couldn’t face
But, since coming home from the war he often drifts off into space
We still love our country, but this ain’t who we sent over there
He’s accustomed to it, but I get really mad when people stare
I heard him softly curse that he wished they’d let him die
Unplugged the cord, seen a smile, he’s going to his maker, and now we cry
Who are we to make that person’s final call?
If all they have left is misery, I’ll make it and I’ll stand tall
His last words to the guys was, “be proud, fight hard, love the women too!”
Finally, he softly uttered these words, “America, I still love you!”
This hero had a name and it just happened to be Uncle Sam
The war that took him from us was the unpopular Viet Nam
They want it forgotten: But I’ll never forget: I don’t give a damn!
