Village Childhood
Naomi Towett 1999 (Londiani)
Within the village's core, Kenya
Early recollections, a furious pursuit.
Water fetish after the school bell,
Farm-fresh vegetables with stories to share.
With children from the neighbors, chattering together,
Community of oneness, uncommon and gentle.
Public school experiences, fantastic lessons,
Joy stood its ground in the simplicity.
Weekends and holidays, by the course of the river,
Swimming, taking a bath, an innocent, carefree display.
clothes spread out on rocks sun-drying.
An unrivaled childhood in a village.
Parents were not wealthy, still there was much joy.
Happiness that surpasses the influence of wealth.
In the simplicity that brought serenity.
However, life took unexpected turns and some unknown pathways.
Life went on, claimed the lives of some friends.
As stars fade, so do lost connections and friendships.
Yet in the clever echoes of our village's goodwill,
The whisper of childhood laughing says, "We're always near."
