A Letter To The Lecturer

Dear Lecturer,
I really hope this finds you well.
About your students
Be not mean nor unreasonably harsh
Towards them even if they deserve it
For they are more of your future
Than they are your students

Remember, that the child is indeed
The father of the man
And the man is an aggressive rewarder of
Things done to or against the child

There's nothing like,
"it was the Devil's handwork."
It's not written anywhere in the Bible
That the Devil has a handwork
Thus, your acts of wickedness
Could not have been the Devil's handwork
So, think with your brain,
Act with your conscience
And relate with your heart.

You can choose to be wicked today
And weep tomorrow
To be all powerful today
And bury your head in shame tomorrow
Life is nobody's landed property
That's why the table of life
Can turn in anybody's direction
Just whenever life deems fit

Thus, in your dealing with people
Let somebody become successful
Just because they met you
Let someone become great
Just because you were there
To catch them from falling
Let someone soar high in life
Just because you believed in them
And you gave them wings to fly
Let somebody remember you
With a glowing smile on their face
Because when they messed up in the past
You showed up as a friend and not as a judge
Sow seeds that will give you
A harvest of peace and happiness tomorrow

I shall be grateful if this letter
Is given a positive and urgent attention
In the best interest of the human race

Poetically yours
Fidelis Peter Olowu

About this poem

In most African Academic Institutions, some lecturers act as though they are in a constant battle of superiority with their students. The insensitive manner with which they carryout their lecturing job can seriously discourage a young learner from going to school because many of them lecture with an undefined kind of hatred and anger which is the reason why they don't care whether the students are following or not. They just want to fulfill all righteousness by deliver in the lecture as fast as they can and go away to do other things, so, it does not really bother them whether the students understand the lecture or not. Some are so quick to penalize students in exams for something that is not the fault of the student. A student is confused about something and decides to seek clarification from the lecturer, instead of giving the clarification the student wants, the lecturer would rather embarrass or punish the student for seeking clarification. Thus, this poem serves as a message and as a reminder to lecturers and teachers that they should realize that students will not be students forever. The students today will become big people in society tomorrow and if life chooses to happen I'm such a way that you would run into any of these your former students and you would be needing their help, the manner of relationship you built with them in the past is what will ultimately determine the kind of treatment you'd get from them.
