In absence

Deviant being bound in a body in a box
Sight to only behold stars by mind’s eye

Awaken to a desert
Dead oasis found in dreams

Nihilistic sense of zen
Nothing seen in everything

Essence purged through
By the thresh of the abyss

Confronted at once by life, death, self, my brother
Questions, experiences perpetuate each other

Answers abundant with none seeming true
Deep will would choose to create truth anew

In absence all is found

About this poem

This poem, written in late 2021, is a short reflection on the inner trials I faced while first coming to grips with incarceration, and how I chose to rise above them on the way to recreating myself.

I am a 29 year-old African American. I began writing poetry as a means to cope with depression and routine incarceration and now looking to put some of it out there to be hopefully enjoyed. Thank you. more…
