(S.O.S.) Suture of the Soul

How can you be in the present
If you live in the past?
How can you move forward
If yesterday is where you stand fast

If history is where you erect your martyrs mast
How can you expect to last?
Why is existing in antiquity
The line that you cast?

I fail to understand
This line that you tow
The ugliness of our history
Is a vile disgusting show

It’s meant to be a guide
Of what not to do
Not a method
Of reopening old wounds
To keep fresh with the sting of recollection
Or to pour salt
To nurture infection

But to simply remind us through reflection
That those evil times
Deserve rejection
Not to use as a shroud or shield
But as a remembrance of a path to yield

Use history as a cautionary tale
Do not live in its example
And continue to fail
Close the wound
To which you pay tribute
Suture your soul
And put the pain on mute

As time moves forward
History will continue to grow
With each passing day
The less you will care to know

As the present will become the past
And at long last
You will be presented to history
And become a mystery
Of why you couldn’t let the past go
