Children of the Promise

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

Children of the promise rarely live an easy life.
Instead its marked by suffering and has its fill of strife.
One day is very pleasant as your promise fills the room.
But other days are awful and they’re only filled with gloom.
The light breaks through the darkness; and the darkness is destroyed!
But in this life, there’s trouble that a man cannot avoid.
I hear the birdies singing in a grove of barren trees.
The sound of all their voices is just so hard to believe.
The sing although they have no food; their little bellies empty.
We sing because we trust in God! Let not this world temp me.

Very well crafted and with a wonderful message. I would note though that line eight may need a little work as its metering is off and causes the reader, who is in a nice cadence up to that point, to stumble. It is, as far as I can tell, the only thing that detracts from this work, though. Well done. I hope to read more of your work in the future.
