Who I Am

Robert loughran 1962 (Ireland)

My life is who i am.
No escaping the fact.
I watch it reconstruct itself,
both the traveler
and the map.

The thinker and the thought.
Distracting with abstraction.
The planer and the plan,
all predetermined,
blind ,voiceless reaction.

I watch very carefully ,
check along the seams,
for fissures in this construct.
For the tiny streams of freedom,
washing through our dreams.

A lovely sentiment about one's journey through life. I was particularly taken with the lines:

    "I watch it reconstruct itself,
    both the traveler
    and the map."
Until the moment I read those lines, I had never once thought of life as being a map. To me, a map always represented an artificial construct about life's journey. One's roadmap was that which one planned for one's self.
You suggest, counterintuitively, that the map is ever changing reality beyond our ability to successfully control it. It gave me pause.

    Brilliantly crafted work.

However, the second stanza is really rough. The smoothness you start out with in the first stanza turns into stumbling and tripping in the second only to be smoothed out again in the third. This distracts the reader enough to maybe miss the point of the second stanza.

I look forward to reading your future works.
