I Am With You

There was a part of me that went with you.
As I sit in the yard in your spot, sun shining and blue.
I wish I could hear your bark as you always used to do,
Trusting we would run out and play with you.

From the howling of the harmonica
And your submissiveness and trust,
I just want to hug and kiss you again,
And feel that fervent feeling of love.

I want to drive the roads with you by my side,
Or to look in the mirror and see your tongue hanging out wide.

I want to walk to the park with you under the night sky,
And see you look up at me with happiness so bright.

To watch you study the squirrels in the yard during the day,
And see you run and jump and hop and play.

I hope to God, the decision was wise,
No human should ever have to decide what is right.
But we know that there is a time and a place,
And God knew that it was time for Him to see your face.

I hugged your head as the weight set in,
And I cried my eyes out signing the paper with the pen.
It would never feel right saying goodbye to him,
But this was the time, isn't this the result of sin?

I sat outside under the tree with my twin,
We held hands and prayed to find comfort within.
My brother and sister came out, we embraced;
"He went peacefully, peacefully", my sister relayed.

Now I know you wouldn't want me to remember you that way,
So I imagine you could be laying by a crystal clear bay.
And I think about the ones that left before thee,
Dutchie and Max and Tom and Nellie.

I know you were overjoyed to see all of them,
Knowing that you would never be alone again.

Now he was my baby and that will never change,
And that is why I feel all this hurt and pain.

But I'm very lucky, you know?
Because I know he had loved me very much so.

We all feel the emptiness so very deeply,
Because he was ours, our family.
And he loved each and every one of us,
So uniquely.

So, I will try and honor you each and every day ahead,
By bringing light to others the way that you did.
No other dog after you will ever be you,
But you would want us to smile and love them too.

All this to say, a part of me went with you.
But the memories, in time, will heal that like glue.
And I remember those words that God had once said,
"I am with you".

And I believe that you are too.
