Presence.

When I step from my study, all my titles behind,
A canvas meets my eyes, and therein peace I find,
Not in the halls of academia does my deepest pride unwind,
But a painting of just 2 colours bold and tender- a love 13 years kind.

Through every season, side by side,
And in her prime, i cried.
Her form in oils preserved, against time's cruel grind.
Each glance, now she's gone, brightens my darkest bind,
Her presence in my living room, was a solace accidentally designed.

The clock's hands gently took her away,
Yet her memory, pigmented, forever will stay.
For this artwork, her essence, my hands intertwined.
Take my acclaim and honour, its but fleeting praise assigned.
My true achievement is a testament - where her love and joy enshrined.

Her absence reminds me that life's end is unkind,
Why then, when I gaze upon her, is its meaning redefined?
How does her spirit glow a legacy the frame just cannot confine?

Here a poem, for Meg, her presence I'll never consign.

About this poem

I tried so hard in life to build a career and spent 10 years getting a bachelor's, a master's, a PhD, then years publishing academic papers, building myself towards further achievements. But, one day I bought an oil set, took a picture of my dog on a sunny day, she was happy. I painted it- assuming the result wouldn't be anything special. Yet, this spread of three cheap colors on a cheap canvas in a cheap ikea frame has more value than anything I have done in my life. Companionship is the achievement I can't work for, my dog chose to love me and I appreciate that.

Dr Matthew Pears

My name is Matthew. I live in the United Kingdom and work as a researcher in healthcare and education. I've created only some poems over my life and never felt I had emotional capacity to verbalize in in creative ways. As I've got older I realize work and career are not worth mention in this biography. Instead I should mention my family friends and lastly my Jack Russel Meg. These people are more important I I'm just a person lucky to know them. more…
