A May-September Romance

I met her on the Plaka steps
On my way to Parthenon
My ship becalmed at anchor
In the May's Med honeyed sun

She followed me to Naples
Where we stayed at old Capri
And fueled by wine and pasta
We gorged carnality

In France's south and sunny beach
In the hot July bleached sun
We giggled at the topless nymphs
While time began to run

At Spanish Barcelona
On the Ramblas promenade
We dined on wined paella
In slipping August's nod

Our last resort was Lisbon
With Mateus and balmy night
We kissed goodbye in sadness
And swore that we would write

And May ran to September
In that Med cruise long ago
With wine, romance, and Rosa
A joy all sailors know

About this poem

A young sailor remembers a romance with a woman he met in Athens. She followed him around from port to port until they had to say a sad goodbye. They promised to write, but did they?
