I Wish I Could Write Poetry

I wish I could write poetry.

I wish I could write poetry so that I could explain the way your smile feels like sunlight
After spending a year underground

I wish I could write poetry so that I could describe how your laughter makes me feel like I’m drowning while breaking the surface at the same time

I wish I could write poetry so that I could express how I am always cold
But when you touch me, all of the ice melts away,
Reminding me that summer always returns

I wish I could write poetry so that I could define all of the reasons I want to stay by your side for the rest of my life
In any way you will let me

I wish I could write poetry so that I could tell you that you are my soulmate without ever having to say those words

Because I am a coward.

And I am not a poet.

But I love you.

And if I could,
I would write you poem after poem
Telling you all of the ways I love you
And all of the reasons I don’t think I could live without you
And all of the reasons I don’t want to

I wish I could write poetry so that you could know the way I feel
But I can’t

So instead I just smile at you and I hold your hand and I hope that it is enough

I wish I could write poetry
So that I could write it for you
