Girlhood’s Radiance

Girlhood’s radiance
It goes when you turn eleven
It leaves you quietly
It loves you still, silently

Girlhood’s radiance
Your aunt sees it in her child
She saw it when you were young
You wonder what it is, it’s on the tip of your tongue

Girlhood’s radiance
It’s when you feel like a bird
It’s when you’re the sun, the angel
You try to describe it in your journal

Girlhood’s radiance
You don’t know about it when it’s there
But you know it was there when it’s gone
It gets taken away, like the wings of a swan

About this poem

Dear reader, I wrote this poem after I heard my aunt and my mom talking about that radiance you only have when you’re a child. They watched old videos of me when I was seven and saw that radiance in me. Now my aunt’s little daughter has it. I think I remember how it felt to be a little girl. Everything was easy. It seemed like the sun was shining every day. I noticed the beauty in little things. And I was happy about the smallest things. Almost as if the past had a different color palette. I still am a very happy and optimistic person but what you have when you’re little is different. It’s given to you only when you’re young. I hope this poem will make you think of your girlhood. All the best, Sevdanur
