Running in the Dark

Sean P Creagh 1977 (Ireland)

Alarm goes off
Eyes wide open
Cold air bites the skin
Deep breath as legs move forward

Looking into the darkness
Thoughts of the day ahead
Regrets of days gone by
Hope for better times

Lights flicker in the darkness
No sound nor sight of life
The world sleeps as thoughts race
No people, no disappointment, no judgement

Sweat rolls down the skin
Heart pumps faster
Crushing weight of hopes and failures
Legs move faster to dull the thoughts

Tired, exhausted, thoughts are dulled
Another day ahead
To disappoint and be disappointed
Humanity never fails
