A point of time

RTKY 1999 (Singapore)

There was a point
of time
when I was
not sure
of what I could say

if I ever met my friends

at some point.

how

could I
hold
a conversation

when I
                                                        haven’t
 been able to

get  a hold
of    m      y

                                                                                                                              o s

how
              could I

                                 even meet them

when I haven’t

                                                               in some time?

____________

Occasionally
though
I manage
to grasp
at the little trinkets of time,
and watch the golden hour of memories
play like an endless film
stuck in time

the snow globe
turns warm
from my fingers
clutching it like a lifeline,
and the winter inside
awaits the day it can spring forth
and greet the blooming buds
once again

About this poem

This poem was written in reflection of my inability to meet my friends during the darkest periods of my depression. It reflects how my relationship with time changed with depression. Sometimes, I felt like I was stuck at a point of time while others carried on with life. Sometimes, I lose my concept of time I am stuck in my dark world.

I am an undergraduate from the sunny island and city-state of Singapore. I have been battling with depression for 7 years and I am still fighting. My mental health journey has been closely tied with my experience as a writer. After experiencing a traumatic event, I developed PTSD in relation to an activity that I was using to escape back then - writing. It was devastating as a humanities student, and it felt like I had lost my voice. For years, this connection was not discovered and I had suffered tremendously in school as I struggled with writing academic essays under time constraints while my mind was unknowingly battling with PTSD. Drawing this connection did not make things significantly easier, as I had to start building and re-learning how to write again. More importantly, I had to also re-build confidence in myself after losing faith in my own abilities throughout the time I had unknowingly struggled with writing. Reading has always been my favourite past time, and I never imagined that I would one day turn back to poetry as a means to write about my experience. I had studied and enjoyed literature classes back in secondary school, but was always more of an appreciator than a poet. I look forward to journey and growth as I continue to use poetry as a form of expression and self-therapy in making sense of my mental health. more…
