Numbers
Arman Hoque 1977 (Winnipeg)
Numbers
One is just a number;
Not much fun.
Kind of lonely till you add another
Then loneliness is done.
Two can be amusing, some make quite a pair.
Even with just the two, life could be quite fair.
Three lends foundation,
Finally we have a group.
A conspiracy is made between three or more,
Whatever the three are planning for.
Three is a ménage not a crowd,
It’s a stable tripod firmly allowed
To stabilize in most directions,
Soundly set to span generations.
Four is how most families group together.
Building on commonalities finding strength in each other.
Five adds a new dimension;;
Giving experience a new flair.
Everything has a new interpretation;
We redefine positive and fair.
Six is a merry bunch;
We barely got around the table for lunch.
Seven is a high demand;
You rewrite life’s rules to understand.
Numbers are meaningless;
Until they are assigned.
True to the point,
Definition you find.
Put thought in your building…
Assign positions of reverence;
From top to bottom faith instilling…
Each person’s of consequence.
Eight is a sequel to this poem,
The next one carries the tone.
Even in a crowd of eight,
An individual is alone.
Your group is assigned by fate,
But nothing is cast in stone.
