Went and Came

Sheri Shaw 1973 (Illinois)

Slave ships went.
Slave ships came.
Some people prayed, some people paid.
Families clung together, families were in chains.

They burned the huts, of what they called home,
And today they still attempt to allow us none.

Now, we work not in shackles and not in chains,
But we carry bondage in our hearts and brains.
To be black today should not be the same, as the day the slave ships went and came.

Let go of the pain, let go of the hurt
Know that you are priceless, that is your worth.

No man can own you, your freedom is paid.
Not by government papers, but by He who came.
He died on the cross, rose three days from the grave
You can count on Him, Jesus His name.
He paid the price, He paid it all.
You're wonderfully made, in his image you are.

Be free to live.
Be free to love.
Be black and proud for freedoms now,
be glad for change, for we're not the same,
God allowed the ships not for guilt or shame.

He got our attention, and our hearts he saved, through the slave ships that went and the slave ships that came.
