A Clean House

The sink's filled with dirty dishes
The basket's filled with dirty laundry
There's dust in every furniture
The house needs cleaning, hurry!

I start with wiping the book cases and tables
Then I sweep the floor of dirt
I put away all that's messy
Until my whole body hurts

And then I look at my hands
Once everything is done
And look at a clean house
Only to realize that another mess has just begun

And this keeps going on every day
The laundry keeps piling up
Even though I just washed a batch yesterday

Sometimes I think the dishes in the sink
Are just waiting for me
I want to look away but they gave me a wink

I look again at the house
It's not as clean as I thought it was

I picked up a bag and packed all the trash
And threw it out with a loud crash

I looked again at the house
There's still a lot to do

And until the sun sets for the day
I cannot delay what I know to be true

That a house can only be cleaned
When I pick up and clean the mess
That I keep putting off, but now is due

This is everyday life, it cannot be denied
Unless I want a messy and dirty house
To live in, to thrive.

About this poem

When cleaning your house is likened to how you clean up your thoughts.
