The fire was burning bright.

A J C 1958 (Swansea, MA)

The fire was burning bright.

My blood that runs through my veins is brightened, and my eyes are blurred with the flashes and crackling wood on the fire I can see and hear. Then I hear the rustling of leaves in the trees. They tower so high that they seem to be reaching up to the sky. The cool fall breeze blows through my eyes and on my skin. Yet I know winter is coming. Then the fresh scent of the woods, he stands with sturdy hands, and the Blue Jays near him call. Softly, the snowflakes fall as they hit the ground; they don't make a sound. There is no one else around to be found. Only my man. He's always around.

About this poem
