"Became a Man"

An oval face young, pale.  No sign of stubble on chin or cheek. Dark hair sprouting, a light shadow on a shaved head.
Eyes large and dark--vacant
A soundless mouth stunned by horror.
Flag waving ads hinted at glory.  Romantic notions of fawning females admiring.
Alluring epaulets and shining buttons.  Adventurous dreaming "A few good men.."
Promises dashed in a shattering step
No hips to thrust in love, No arms to hold, to cherish.
No choice but life for this young man---
We who mend are shamed with guilt--thanking God for exemption.
Uninitiated run and puke
Soft words and touch is all I have....
Haunted nights come unexpectedly.  The face appears
pleading for remembrance.
Visits are welcomed.....reminding me.
