Battles within

Battles Within
By, Danny Norris
As I get out of the shower, wipe the fog from the mirror.
I think of all the mistakes and how I wound up back here.
I splash water on my face to wash the tears away,
Try to black out the shame that I feel each and every day.
But as I meet the eyes of this man staring right back,
I don't seem to recognize this person from my past.
It's a battle against myself,
A battle deep within, a demon of my past I had prayed I'd never see again.
But here he is taunting me with his blue hazy glare,
His stupid pathetic grin, tattoos and angry stare.
I whisper I beat you once, and I can do it again,
He just laughs, you can never beat me, I'm deep within.
I'm you, well, who you were meant to be.
Regardless, the change in close
Hair and size, you're still me.
I try and swallow the anger, the pain and the fear,
And try and ask God for a way out of here.
But as usual, I hear nothing but the fan in the silence,
As hateful visions fill my head with the violence.
The violence I had beaten, the life I thought was gone.
Guess he was just sleeping, I guess I was wrong.
As he laughs In a taunting fit of rage,
He mocks me with his grin and says you only turned the page.
I am always here and you can never win.
For I am part of you and you me, I am your battle with in.
So go ahead and try to do what you must,
But always remember the only one you can trust.
The things you've done that you've never told a soul,
They are me, and I'll never let them, or you, go.
You're mine forever, don't you even see.
That I am you, and you will always be me.
I know all about the pain you try and hide again and again,
And no matter how hard you've tried, I still remain within.
There's only one way to stop me, but that's you too.
As he smirks, he says, do what you have to do.
But just remember, I'll see you once again,
For I will always remain to be your hardest battle, living deep within.
About this poem
This is a poem I wrote when I was at the peak of my addiction. I was sober for 11 years and lost my dad. Then fell back into my addiction. I now have 9 months sober and lost my baby brother to this terrible disease one year ago today (RIP Terry jo Norris 02/26/1989 - 01/28/2023
